Our trip to Austria and Poland was an opportunity to build up some good mileage but over the last couple of weeks I've been doing a lot of short distance runs. It was time to try and run the Edale skyline, it's time to get some off road distance training in. The Edale skyline was ideal for this. I started from the school in Hope village and wandered through the mists, briskly up Lose hill.
I thought I was familiar with this route, e.g.
It was foggy for most of the day route finding was fine, however... By the time I arrived at the eastern end of Kinder I was running with fine form. There is a problem here... there were not many features and although I started off on a compass bearing I ran to the north for half a mile instead of reaching Crookstone barn!
I struggled on the final climb up Win Hill and finally returned to Hope village after 5 hours and 43 minutes. The full route with timings was recorded on map my run. I was in time for the schoolrun!
Short distance running is good for building pace pace but not strength. To stand a chance of completing the full 50 mile route it's important to build on strength and through hill climbing and off road running.
